An interview with Kenyan Engineer Andrew Kago

Andrew Kago is an engineer at Stands Engineers in Kenya and new member to ISCS. He tends to be introverted, but passionate about each project as well as the sum of his contributions to the built environment. He received his education in civil engineering at the University of Nairobi and has worked in both the public and private sectors focusing on water, transport and structures. He is currently researching transportation of Heavy Crude Oil via Kenya’s export pipeline. Thanks to modern technology we were able to “sit down” with our long-distance friend and have a candid conversation about life and work in Kenya.

The ISCS story of sustainablity was shared at this year’s annual SaaStr convention in SanFrancisco with Pixar’s Jason Katz and Prezi CEO Peter Arvai on February 6th at the Hilton Union Square Hotel. Attendees learned that in order to effectively communicate ideas one must be able to tell a story visually as well as verbally. The idea of visually story telling is especially relevant in the world of design and construction and the message was well received by the audience. Guests also got a quick glimpse of some of the projects that ISCS has had a hand in shaping.

2018 is only just beginning and it is already a big year for ISCS. In January we partnered with the Las Vegas chapter of CSI for a two day concrete symposium covering vertical concrete applications, foam core construction, architectural exposed structural concrete (AESC) and a hands on class for constructors demonstrating how to refine concrete to reduce use of sealers, epoxies and coatings while also maintaining high traction coefficient of friction (COF). The two-day event came to an end with a charity celebration involving roller derby and music in an effort to provide clothes and blankets for the local homeless community. ISCS would like to specifically thank Robin Snyder of Spectra Consulting, Clark County, National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI), the National Center for Education and Research on Corrosion and Materials Performance (NCERCAMP), Cashman Equipment, Lilly Winwood and the Fabulous Sin City Roller Girls!

The International Society of Construction Sciences (ISCS) in partnership with the Las Vegas chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) and the National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI) is proud to bring you the Las Vegas Concrete Symposium on January 24th 2018. Special Guest Speakers include material scientist Rae Taylor, PhD and decorative concrete specilaist Nathan Giffin.

In the world of architectural exposed concrete floors, few things are as important as the coefficient of friction (COF). However, the industry has suffered from an almost antithetical approach in which floors are beautiful but answers to questions surrounding their prime function-a safe walking surface-have until recently been harder to define. The correct way to measure initial COF for exposed concrete surfaces is with ANSI/National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI) B101.3, Wet Dynamic COF Standard. The prescriptive method for describing, installing, and maintaining safe COF is with the International Society of Construction Sciences (ISCS) 101, Surface Texture Grade and Coefficient of Friction Guideline. Please follow the link and read more about floor safety in this month’s issue of Construction Specifier Magazine.
